OUR HAWAIIAN TEA COMPANY

In 1995 with a passion for great tea, and an entrepreneurial spirit,  I founded Hawaiian Islands Tea Company.  My idea was to bring the tropical fruits of the Hawaiian Islands to the tea cup in the form of satisfying and refreshing all-natural tropical flavored teas.  This has been my quest for the past 14 years.

My journey in the Hawaii tea trade has been rewarding and it is with great pride and pleasure that I can offer my quality Hawaiian Islands Tea Company products to my fellow tea enthusiasts.  It is my hope that you will discover and enjoy my special blends of island made teas.  Aloha!

TEA & HEALTH

The relationship between tea and health has been repeatedly examined for the past 4700 years, ever since the first tea infusions took place in China.  Today tea is second only to water as the most widely drank beverage in the world, and there is much empirical evidence to show the benefits of tea drinking and its role in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Modern scientific research has been undertaken to investigate links between tea consumption and specific curative properties.  Some research has suggested and even supported certain health claims for tea, though other studies have failed to find support for some health related claims.    Read what current research indicates . . .

HAWAIIAN TEA

Growing Tea in Hawaii

For nearly a decade now a small number of pioneering tea farmers have been propagating, growing and processing the true tea plant, Camellia sinensis, on Hawaii's 'Big Island'.  Worldwide all varities of green, black, white and oolong teas are made from this single genus/species.

The farms are small, most at elevations of 3000 to 4000 feet, and tea production is currently very limited but the quality of the teas produced is considered by experts to range from very-good to near excellent.  The tea leaves are hand-harvested and skillfully hand-processed into teas that can best be characterized as semi-oxidized oolongs.

FLAVORED TEA

It is well known that tea leaves readily absorb nearby aromas and flavor.  In China in ancient times it is recorded that tea bushes in Imperial Gardens were planted between fragrant fruit trees to allow the tea leaves to capture the desirable aromas.

Today there are several ways to flavor tea leaves.  Learn more about flavored Tea . . .

HOW TO BREW TROPICAL TEA

BrewingTropical Tea

Tropical Teas are Flavorful. We find range of personal preferences for these teas and how they are brewed. On the one hand are those who prefer to discriminate and taste the tropical flavor in the tea and with less emphasis on the flavor strength from the tea leaf itself. Others prefer strong flavor from the tea leaf and only secondarily from the tropical fruit or nut flavor added to the leaf. These preferences can be controlled by the steep time. The longer the tea steeps the stronger the flavor from the tea leaf and the more the tropical flavor is masked.  More on Brewing A Perfect Cup ...

Tea Tips: Two other tips regarding tropical flavored teas, (1) the fruit and/or nut flavors are noticeably stronger as the hot teas cool, and in fact this is why these teas make refreshing and tasty iced teas, and (2) the natural fruit flavors we use are unsweetened and adding a sweetener will significantly enhance the teas tropical flavor. (3) You always want to pour the hot water over the tea, instead of placing dry tea into hot water already poured. This is because the jolt of hot water on the tea leaf acts to open the cells quickly and release locked up flavor components.  Read More Tea Tips . . .
